If you went to the cinema or logged onto Disney+ (or maybe you've bought the DVD) to watch the new Marvel film, Black Widow, you’ll have seen the first action scene where characters Natasha, Yelena, Melina and Alexei escape from Ohio in an aircraft. Later in the film you’ll also have watched the scenes at Melina’s pig farm in St. Petersburg.
The film is brilliant... but what we’re really excited about is seeing our polytunnels in a Marvel film! We could pretend to be humble and claim it’s just our job, but it’s not every day that we get to see our polytunnels in an actual movie!
Talking about the film in July, in particular the first action scene, production designer Charles Wood said:
OHIO ESCAPE AND CUBA
Scene: In 1995, Natasha, Yelena, Melina and Alexei escape from Ohio when they’re exposed as Russian spies, fleeing via a small airfield before landing in Cuba.
Location: The Ohio airstrip was built in England while the Cuba landing was also filmed in England with establishing shots filmed over the Bahamas.
Charles Wood said: “We’ve built this big farm, this American farm environment, at an airfield close to us here, which plays for Ohio. Even as a set, it may not be construction but in set dressing, that was a quarter of a mile long and we grew grass fields, we put these polytunnel structures up. It’s where they get out of the USA and fly off to Cuba”.
We watched the film in summer, not knowing if the polytunnels scenes had made the cut, but we were excited to see that they had. We didn’t even mind seeing a car flipping through the air straight into the side of one of the tunnels!
If you haven’t seen the film yet, don’t forget to look out for the MARVEL-ous polytunnels.
